Mr Hawke is self-confident, self-advertising, at times abrasive. His manner appeals to many Australians, while offending others. Admired as a reformed drinker and womaniser.
His election victories in 1984 and in July 1987 made him the first-ever Labor Prime Minister to enjoy a third successive term. He holds strong personal views on some issues (eg South Africa) but his general approach is essentially a pragmatic one and he is quick to 'compromise.
Married 1956 Hazel Masterson. One son, two daughters.
