UK/AUSTRALIA OFFICIALS' TALKS: POLITICAL TALKS

1.

I

We have now heard from Canberra (telegram attached) that the Australians are happy with the dates which we put to them for the political talks, ie one and a half days in the period 6-8 May would be grateful if you could now let me know precisely which days would suit you best and if you would mark them in your diary. In arriving at a decision you might like to consider an idea which Canberra raised earlier on about their getting the Australian National University in Canberra to organise a seminar on Asia/ Pacific or European questions, in which you could participate. Canberra have made it quite clear, and we agree, that this idea. would only be feasible if you could stay on for an extra day after the talks. It should not cut into them.

2. We have reached agreement with the Australians on a provisional agenda for the talks as follows:

Asia/Pacific Security

Japan's regional and international roles

North East Asia (Korea, Northern Territories)

Prospects for Hong Kong

-

China
