ANGLO-JAPANESE OFFICIAL TALKS ON THE FUTURE OF HONG KONG
1. As you know, Messrs Miyamoto (Head of China Division)
and Ishii (Desk Officer) are visiting us on 3-4 June for
working level official talks on China and Hong Kong. The
HKD session will take place on 3 June from 1430-1630 hours.
2.
I will chair the discussion and lead on our side. But I
would welcome support, where appropriate, from Mr Cox and
Section Heads.
3.
Mr Takahashi of the Japanese Embassy here has given me
the following outline of the matters which the Japanese side
wish to cover:
- Sino-British negotiations on Hong Kong, including the work
of the JLG and the airport negotiations.
How to maintain the stability and prosperity of Hong Kong
in the interests of the region as a whole.
What particular problems do the Chinese face over Hong Kong? What role can Japan play in helping to resolve these problems? (I suspect that the latter question may be with particular reference to the airport issue).
