meetings was that the Japanese, both in government and in
business and banking circles, are deeply concerned and
puzzled by the continuing deadlock over the airport; that
they see the project as a vital element in the maintenance
of confidence in Hong Kong and in the preservation of its important status in the region; and that they are ready to intervene with the Chinese in any way that would be helpful.

I had a particularly interesting talk on 18 June with Mr
Sagawa, one of the Deputy General Managers of C Itoh, who is closely acquainted with the details of the airport project. He said that C Itoh had received, direct from Lu Ping, a
