United Democrat's Petition
4.
The attempt by UDHK to tell the Governor who to
appoint to LegCo was widely criticized as being conceited,
rash, and domineering.
There were different views on
their demand for proportionate appointment, but it was
the manner that drew most of the criticism.
UDHK's glory
and euphoria from the election's landslide victory was
thus erased almost completely by this tumble. Its public
image has been damaged.
The List of Appointed Members

The public has reacted positively to the list.
They consider it
it acceptable because it shows that the
government has not acceded to the demand of UDHK or bowed
to pressure from the Chinese side who failed
single seat in the election. People are generally pleased
that the selected members are either
scholars, or
affiliations.

Even though many of these appointed members are
believed to be pro-government, it is understandable and
people do not expect otherwise. Because they are consi-
dered as independents, people also hope that they do not
act merely as rubber-stamps but in accordance with their
Own judgements and the ultimate goal of serving Hong
Kong's future.

People generally fear change. Many at grass-
root level do not quite understand the implications of
the rules of confidentiality and collective responsi-
bility. Yet, despite the lack of mass support on United
Democrats' requests on changing this,
on changing this, there is a general
feeling that there should be more

transparency and more
government's decision making
process.
