Dear Mr Brazier,

Thank you for your reply of the 22nd August 1990 which concerned the prosecution of the pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong Kong, by the Hong Kong Attorney General.

You kindly attached a copy of the letter from the Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office who

simply reaffirmed the fact of the case being subjudice.

I have not heard any follow up on the above and would be glad of any information regarding the case.

I should be most grateful for your comments regarding the

most unfortunate remarks made today on The World at One on BBC Radio 4

by a Conservative MP, by name Mr Astley (?) who made the case that as Hong Kong has never had a'democratic system, it seemed unecessary to install one in the future. These were not his actual words.

Mr Astley, (your party's MP) also condemned the previous speaker's words as "prattle". The prattle spoken by Mr Lee of the Hong Kong Democrats pointed out that China still has in prison person or persons of the Pro-Democracy move- ment in China. It would follow that persons now living in Hong Kong would not necessarily be free to express their views after 1997.

It may well be a sensitive time for diplomats dealing with the arrangements for the handing over of Hong Kong to China, but as

a free citizen, I believe that we and your political party must not be seen to be tacitly allowing the Chinese to rule with an iron fist in Hong Kong.

What does the Conservative Party think on this matter?

Yours sincerely
