The number of emigrants is mainly estimated from
the visa statistics, allowing for a time lag between visa issue and physical departure in light of the validity
period of the immigrant vica jeened by differant

The figures relate to the total number of people and includes all members of the family. (One Visa is required for each person.) Note the established trend at about 20,000 per year up to 1986 and the sharp jump in 1988. The drop in 1989 is a cyclical phenomenon; not significant.
