Dear Ms. Lawton
I live in Hong Kong. As you probably know, in the course of almost 150 years, under British patronage and through the industry of the people, this Crown Colony has blossomed. Everybody, including Britain, has benefited from this free haven.
However, under our British system, Hong Kong is not a democracy. I don't have a say in my future, particularly with regard to the restoration of right of abode. But you do.
Of all the arguments you may have heard for and against right of abode, none is as fundamental as the argument that Britain must stand by its commitment to human rights. The people of Hong Kong depend on that. And always have.
But of all the British subjects throughout history, we alone are being handed over to Communist rule without even being asked. Handed over to the mercy of a political culture which is as alien to me as it is to you.
I understand you may be concerned about possible mass immigration. But millions of us will not land on your doorstep. We are happy here. We don't want to leave. Hong Kong is our home. But we need to know we have the guaranteed freedom to leave. Recent atrocities in China have made it all the more clear that we must have that basic human right.
How can the British Government deny the ideals of freedom and democracy over practicality?
The issue is really a very simple one. It is one of honouring moral responsibility.
Right now you have in your hands the power to help. Show your support for the restoration of right of abode by signing and returning the enclosed postpaid card now.
Please...do right by the people of Hong Kong.
Yours sincerely,
KARRIZ Yu
