REVIEW OF MERCHANT NAVY SENIOR OFFICER NATIONALITY REQUIREMENTS
1.
The Department of Transport, MOD and ourselves are currently carying out a review of Merchant Navy Senior Officer Nationality requirements. At present Hong Kong British nationals are eligible for these senior posts (Master, Chief Officer and Chief Engineer) if they have acceptable certificates, but as part of this review, we need to consider their status after 1997. I should be grateful if you could tell me what our view will be of the nationality of people with Hong Kong British passports after 1997. Will they continue to be British for the rest of their lives, or will they immediately become Chinese nationals?
2. Could I please have a response by noon on 25 July as we are meeting to discuss this on 26 July.
