H Kong. They do, of course, have the right to come to this country with their husband or wife for settlement at any time, before or after 1997. However, in view of the special circumstances in Hong Kong, and the strong representations which have been made by the British community there, I am prepared to offer an assurance that the widowed spouse of a British citizen who was resident in Hong Kong at the time of his or her death would be allowed to settle in the UK at any time, either before or after 1997. This assurance would be limited to widows or widowers who had not remarried remained resident in Hong Kong and did not have citizenship of another country; but subject to that there would not be any time limit on the assurance.

You may be interested to know that I am today answering a question in the House of Commons on this point and I shall be emphasising the Government's commitment to accept widowed spouses from Hong Kong.

I hope that this will reassure which British citizens in Hong Kong about the position of their spouses.
