WIVES OF EXPATRIATE BRITISH CITIZENS IN HONG KONG: CORRESPONDENCE FROM MR MICHAEL MORRIS MP
As you know, the Home Secretary and Mr Lloyd have agreed to Mr Paul Channon and Mr Julian Walsh of the Concerned British Expatriates
Society on 12 June to discuss their campaign for British citizenship for the spouses of British citizens in Hong Kong.
2. Similar representations from the Concerned British Expatriates Society have been forwarded by Mr Michael Morris MP, who recently
visited Hong Kong and met Mr Walsh (Annex A). Mr Morris seems to
be unaware of the assurance which the Home Secretary gave at Second Reading of the Hong Kong Bill in respect of widowed spouses, and this undertaking effectively meets his point about the risk of
widows being stranded in Hong Kong in the event of the British partner's death.
I attach a draft reply for Mr Lloyd's signature. I suggest that this should not go until after Tuesday's meeting with Mr Channon and Mr Walsh but it would be helpful if it could be despatched
immediately after the meeting to reach Mr Morris before the
following day's proceedings on the Hong Kong Bill.
