My fax LOT 1068 dated 3 April refers. A copy of the Home Secretary's letter to Conservative MPs rebutting the arguments in Norman Tebbit's letter is in MIFF. Our sources have indicated that Tebbit's letter may have the opposite effect on some Tory MPS as they regard it as a calculated move in his leadership challenge. Sir Peter Hordern, MP, the Secretary of the 1922 Committee (of Tory Back-benchers) has criticized Tebbit's move by saying that "it was not right or helpful for a former Cabinet Minister to take such action" (Independent, 4 April).
