4. I should point out that these are still educated guesses until
the precise dates of the committee stage are determined. We should
have a clearer view once the Selection Committee have decided on the
composition of the Standing Committee for the Bill, and timetable
decisions have been taken. According to the Home Office
Parliamentary Clerk, Sir Marcus Fox, Chairman of the Selection
Committee has indicated that the Committee are likely to agree to
the Government Whips' recommendations on the size of the Bill
Committee and the membership of the Government team. (The Whips
have proposed an 18 member committee with 1l conservative, 6 Labour
and 1 other member.) I attach a list of the proposed Government
team.
5. The Selection Committee is meeting on 25 April to agree the membership. After that the business managers will arrange for the
committee stage to begin on 1 May and will also decide when the
Committee will meet, (ie. possibly on Tuesday and Thursday
afternoons and on Wednesdays, as well as on Tuesday and Thursday mornings).
