This note has been focused on the selection of up to 50,000 heads of households. Spouses and children under

children under 18 will be eligible to seek registration as British citizens and will normally receive it as a matter of course. Suitability checks will, however be carried out on spouses and children aged 16 or over, and there will be discretion to withhold citizenship where the Secretary of State is not satisfied that an applicant is of good character.

Unlike heads of households, dependants will be eligible regardless of whether they reside in Hong Kong or of their nationality. However,

However, where a head of household contracts a marriage after ceasing to reside in Hong Kong the spouse will not be eligible for British citizenship.

36. Children born after the registration of the head of household, including those born after 30 June 1997, will be British citizens automatically. Citizenship will not however be transmissible to spouses married after 30 June 1997.
