I refer to my letter of August 24, to

The letter of resignation from one
of our senior sales staff enclosed with my first letter had actually prompted
his first letter.
The girl concerned who had worked with me for 19 years and who is one of our area sales manageress, has been tremendously encouraged by your letter stating that "it may well be
our own staff
about whom we are concerned, will benefit under the terms of the scheme to give assurance of right of abode to people in the private and public sectors on the basis of value of service to Hong Kong as well as connections with Britain.
As a result of your letter she has withdrawn her resignation and, to our delight has decided to continue working with The Body Shop.
All our senior indispensable staff feel highly reassured
y your letter and I thank you for this. However, as I mentioned in

there is a mass exodus from Hong Kong from all levels, and on talking to the vast majority of people one finds that its no longer a question of whether they will leave Hong Kong to obtain other passports but a matter of when they will leave.
Our newspapers each day are full of articles and letters about the exodus. (Enclosed are a couple of typical ones) Every industry is suffering badly from this exodus. Please tell Mrs. Thatcher that, as Lord Wyatt on a recent visit here said,
