HONG KONG ASSURANCES

1.

Mr Maude spoke to the Chinatown-Conservative Association last night about Hong Kong. He would be grateful for advice on two of the questions that came up:

- They asserted that about 1200 people a year were coming in to the UK from Hong Kong; this was fewer than from Japan. Would they be able to use that system? (And are therrelative figures for immigration from Hong Kong and Japan correct?)

-

They asked whether, under our scheme, it would be possible to prevent Hong Kong people who had already had Australian or Canadian passports getting UK ones as well. How can this be prevented?
