Dear Mr. Brandon Bravo
GOVERNMENT SECRETARIAT
LOWER ALBERT ROAD
HONG KONG
10 January 1990
It was so kind of you and Mrs. Brandon Bravo to spend some time with me on 2 January 1990 during your short visit to Hong Kong. During our conversation you expressed interest in knowing more about the personal profile of a typical Hong Kong British Dependent Territory Citizen who would be the principal beneficiary of the nationality package announced by the Foreign Secretary on 20 December 1989.
Our records show that there are about 3.25 million British Dependent Territory Citizens in Hong Kong, of whom 3.2 million, i.e. 98.5% are Hong Kong born. The rest include those born in China or elsewhere who became BDTC largely through registration.
Recent immigrants from China only constitute a very small number of BDTCS. Since 1 January 1983, only 23,890 entrants from China have been so registered, i.e. 0.7% of the total number of BDTCS. They comprise
i)
-
20,001 HK BDTCs granted entry permits to return to K after long absence;
ii)
2,813 spouses from China; and
iii) 1,076 children under 13 from China.
