No plans to do so at present.
We shall continue to
follow the situation closely. A decision would depend on
Lithuania meeting our criteria for recognition as a state: ie being genuinely sovereign and independent, with government exercising effective jurisdiction and an independent foreign policy.
Have HMG not recognised Lithuania since before the war,
refusing to accept de jure, incorporation of Lithuania into
the Soviet Union.
We never recognised the Baltic States as being legally
incorporated. But we are now dealing with Lithuanian
self-determination in today's circumstances.
Will HMG compensate future Baltic governments for gold
deposits used to reimburse British claimants following the
Anglo-Soviet claims agreement of 1968?
I suggest we take one step at a time. urgent issues at stake.
