HONG KONG: MEETING WITH MR ERIC HO, 8 AUGUST
/ 1. Mr Eric Ho is calling on you at 1200 on Wednesday
8 August.
2. Mr Ho (63) is a former Hong Kong civil servant, who
retired in 1987 as Secretary for Trade and Industry. He
served for 10 years on LegCo and was also an official member
of ExCo from 1985-87.

3. Mr Ho is now Chairman of the Public Service Commission,
an independent body which advises the Hong Kong Government
on recruitment and promotions to the middle and senior ranks of the Public Service. You might therefore wish to ask him
about the current state of morale in the Civil Service and
the effect of localisation on the quality of candidates.

Mr Ho is also President of the Welfare League, an organisation which represents the Eurasian Community in Hong
Kong. In this capacity he has lobbied energetically for special provision to be made for Eurasians under the British
Nationality (Hong Kong) Act. Copies of his exchange of correspondence with Mr Maude on this subject are attached. Our position is set out in Mr Maude's letter of 13 July.
