PROPOSAL FOR A CAYMAN ISLANDS GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVE IN HONG KONG
1. On the face of it, I cannot see why the proposed is such a bad
idea to reject it out of hand. It would certainly help as a booster
to confidence if the Cayman Island Government set up an "official"
office.
2.
I am not so sure about a private group doing it however.
If the Cayman Islands can offer residency to Hong Kong businessmen without their having to leave the territory then I think we should probably encourage it.
3. The worry, however, is that the CIG are simply hoping to "cherry
pick" some of Hong Kong's business and businessmen (No different I
suspect to what Gibraltar have in mind).
4. I recommend that we agree the WIAD draft, but inserting a
proviso that Hong Kong Government views should be sought before
al rejecting the proposed outright. WIAD confirm that they are not
keen on the idea anyway, but thought they would get the HKD view before stamping on it.
