Many thanks for your letter of 20 April about Mr Maude's statement on the nationality issue when in Hong Kong.

We could quibble about the accuracy or interpretation of some of your quotations, but the important point is that Mr Maude felt himself justified in making the statement and comments that he did when here, based on his exchanges with capitals including Canberra.
3. I have sent a copy of your letter to the FCO in London.
4. I am very happy to agree to the suggestion in your last paragraph. We certainly want no misunderstandings with you on this (or any other! ) issue.
