ENFORCEMENT OF HONG KONG JUDGEMENT

Thank you for your letter of 4 May 1989.

We should like to help your clients enforce the judgement they have received from the Supreme Court of Hong Kong but we are unable to do so in the manner in which the document is presently presented. The Chinese authorities have told us that under normal international practice (and in the absence of any specific bilateral agreement), operations of this kind can only be carried out by means of a formal request from one country's court to another through diplomatic channels, sealed with the court's seal, and accompanied by a Chinese translation. We have already passed this advice back to Miss Wong in the Chief Secretary's Office and would suggest that you get in touch with her direct to discuss the re-presentation of the document. Meanwhile I am copying to her your letter together with the judgement itself and this reply.

Yours faithfully
