PRESS RELEASE
VISA ABOLITION AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE UNITED KINGDOM AND THE GERMAN
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC
The Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland and the Government of the German Democratic
Republic have, through an exchange of Diplomatic Notes agreed to
abolish the requirement for their nationals to obtain a visa for entry to the territory of the other state.
An amendment to the Immigration Rules will be necessary before
this Agreement can come into force and this will shortly be laid
before Parliament.
Those persons visiting the United Kingdom, who meet the
requirements of the Immigration Rules may be granted permission to
stay in the United Kingdom for a period of 6 months unless the
Immigration Officer is satsified that there are particular
circumstances which justify the giving of a shorter period of leave.
