CHINESE REACTIONS TO THE BRITISH NATIONALITY (HONG KONG)
BILL
1.
146
Thank you for your minute of 13 June, on which I have
the following comments (corresponding to the sub paragraphs
of your minute):
(a) This cannot be literally true, as there will be persons "born in China whose parents are Chinese nationals or one of whose parents is a Chinese national" who have foreign nationality by virtue of marriage to a
foreign national or residence in another country;
(b) Whilst the Chinese Government may seek to place conditions on renunciation of nationality, to do so
would be inconsistent with the absence of any conditions
placed on the defacto renunciation of Chinese nationality which has taken place in respect of millions of Overseas Chinese (who are recognised and treated as foreigners if they visit China);
