HONG KONG: CONSULAR PROTECTION/DUAL NATIONALITY
1.
In his minute of 12 January, Mr Yeo recorded that the Secretary
of State had undertaken to look into a point made by Mr Grierson of
GEC, that people who acquire British citizenship are not able to
claim British consular protection in their country of origin after acquiring their British citizenship.
2. I submit a draft letter to Mr Grierson which sums up the
present position. It incorporates advice from Hong Kong and has been cleared with our Legal Advisers and NTD.
