HONG KONG: POST 1997 ARRANGEMENTS FOR WAR GRAVES

1.

(20)

Thank you for your letter of 5 July which was most helpful. understand that James So, the Director of Urban Services in Hong Kong, had a useful discussion with the CWGC during his visit to the UK in August.

2.

H

We were grateful for clarification on the subject of managing your affairs in Hong Kong directly (paragraph 2 of your letter). HKG have indicated that they are prepared to have the law suitably amended to allow the GWGC greater flexibility in managing these cemeteries.

3.

HKG have also confirmed that you would be consulted further in the event of difficulty arising over the Deeds of Appropriation in the Land Commission. They have indicated that they expect to raise the matter in the Land Commission towards the end of this

year.

4. On the subject of a War Graves Agreement I understand that James So has undertaken, on behalf of HKG, to explore whether the CWGC's concerns might be met by other means, such as legislative amendments, rather than by a formal WGA. We shall of course keep you informed on this.

Yours sincerely
