Dear Department,
ALLOCATION OF CALL/SIGNS TO HONG KONG: PITCAIRN
CALL
1. FCO telno 118 to Grand Turk sought our views on the proposal that the VR and VS series of radio call signs be re-assigned exclusively to Hong Kong.
2. In my letter of 14 June 1989 (copy attached) to Lynda Cooke in SPD I recorded the attachment of the Pitcairners to their present VR6 call signs, and referred to the assurance given to us in November 1988 by Radio and Communications Division of the DTI that, if change to the present system became necessary, they would insist upon adequate (4-5 years) notice being given.
3. We cannot pretend that the interests of half a dozen or so Pitcairn radio operators outweigh the arguments adduced in TUR. But if Pitcairn's call sign is to change, then we think it is reasonable to ask that adequate notice should still be given, and that the operators concerned should be reimbursed for the cost of any redundant QSL cards. The source of such reimbursement would be for the Department to find; we do not see that it should be met from Pitcairn's small budget, even though the sum involved would not be great.
