Thank you for copying to me your telegram Otter 266. You might be interested to see a copy of my reply to Gordon Manzie. I have also sent a copy to Robin McLaren.

It was useful that you could confirm that there had been no encouragement for a pre-emptive bid in any of the meetings you attended. Certainly, there should not have been any such encouragement. It remains, however, for each firm to do what they think is best in light of their own commercial judgement.

I was sorry to hear that, when John Fletcher of Trafalgar was here, he seemed to have some very strange ideas about how bids, pre-emptive or otherwise, from non British firms, might be given preference. This is nonsense. I hope his misunderstandings have now been straightened out.
