commercial, industrial and other uses which will be determined as a result of a planning process now under way. Major transport and infrastructure works will be included.
The reclamation is divided into two areas, North and South, divided by a line at Cherry Street. The project includes the formation of new breakwaters and seawalls, the reprovisioning of all affected waterfront uses, drainage, and seawa- ter intake and pumping facilities.
The West Kowloon Reclamation will make land available for completion of the transportation facilities to be in operation by the early 1997 opening of the new airport. These links include the West Kowloon Expressway and the Route Three facilities, the Western Harbour Crossing, and the Airport Railway and its associated down-town terminal and stations.
The West Kowloon Reclamation will provide commercially attractive packages of land that will support early generation of revenue. The project has an overall objective of creating an attractive environment for a mix of residential, commer- cial, industrial, and other uses which will be determined as a result of a planning process now under way.
The reclamation project is in the final design and tender phases, with the intial reclamation contract in the South Area now under way. This contract was in relation to the relocation of the Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter and it went to Gammon HK Ltd. Detailed designs are in preparation for other contracts in both the project areas.
Detailed design work in the South area started in early 1990 and in the North area in the second quarter. The reclamation will involve 28.8 cubic metres of dredging, 68 million cubic metres of fill and 7.8 kilometres of seawalls. There will be seven main reclamation projects. Extensive relocation of existing port facilities and infrastructure will take place.
The Civil Engineering Services Department, Hong Kong Government, is respon- sible for the South Area. Mott MacDonald Hong Kong Ltd is responsible for the design of the North Area.
