Chau Tsai. The expressway corridor will include space for the road, the twin-track high-speed rail link and a service road which incorporates a reserve for utilities.
The expressway is now being designed in detail by the consultants Mott MacDonald Hong Kong Ltd who started work in July 1990. Construction should start in the first quarter of 1992.
Phase One of Development at Tung Chung
By the year 2011 about 200 000 people may live in the new town at Tung Chung. What is under way now is the design of the first phase of this project and it is planned that the new town will have about 20 000 residents by the time the airport opens in 1997. As well as housing, open space, institutional, community and government facilities will be provided. The preliminary design is also being done by Mott MacDonald Hong Kong Ltd and land formation should start in1992.
Lantau rixea Crossing
The Lantau Fixed Crossing will carry road and rail traffic from Lantau Island to Tsing Yi Island. It will incorporate two major bridges and a viaduct, together with facilities at each end. The link will consist of an upper deck six-lane expressway and a lower deck carrying the high-speed rail link and two lanes for vehicles.
I here will be an interchange at the west with the North Lantau Expressway and at the east with the Tsing Yi section of Route Three.
The Tsing Ma suspension bridge, between Tsing Yi and Ma Wan Islands, will feature a 1 377 metres long main span and will measure 2032 metres overall. The bridge will be the third longest suspension bridge in the world when completed.
i ne Kap snui Mun bridge, between Ma Wan and Lantau Islands, will feature a 441 metre main span and will be 691 metres long overall.
Both the bridges include unique features such as the special requirements to allow them to operate in typhoon conditions and the fact that they carry a railway.
i ne Lantau Fixed Crossing will be completed before the new airport opens. Pre- qualification of tenderers has been called for with advanced works expected to start in the rourin quarter of 1991 and construction starting in the second quarter of 1992. Mott MacDonald Hong Kong Ltd are the consultants.
