YOUR TELNO 3308: SANCTIONS AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA

avvition/

Amendments.

PJW.

1. The ban on purchasing certain kinds of steel from South

Africa remains in place. It was one of the measures agreed at

the EC Meeting of Foreign Ministers in September 1986.

CSAD

A full K216 list of restrictive measures, Commonwealth and EC will be faxed Tel.

to Bradley. This will include details of the types of steel

covered by the EC ban.

2. Prospects for ending the steel import ban are improving

but the community is still some way from the consensus

required. Ministers have agreed that a positive signal should

be sent to the South African Government, but it is unlikely

that the Rome Summit, 14-15 December, will result in progress

on steel.
