Dear Sir,

Annex E

26 June 1990

Gazette Notice No. 452 dated 9/2/90 Notification under Section 5 of

Foreshore & Seabed (Reclamations) Ordinance (Chapter 12) Replacement Airport at Chek Lap Kok, Lantau Island

I refer to your letter dated 2 April 1990 in which you register your concern and objection to the proposal of constructing a new airport at Chek Lap Kok.

I appreciate your concern about the effects of the activities for the implementation of the airport to your Castle Peak Power Stations as these stations provide electricity supply to a large area of the territory. The importance of the proper functioning of these power stations is recognized.

You have listed several specific fields which you think that your operations may be affected but I trust that the effects will be minimal and my reasoning is as follows:

1.

Effect on the operation of the Castle Peak Power Stations

Government's policy is to carry Out full environmental impact assessments for large public projects. Extensive studies were also carried out in 1982 for the Chek Lap Kol site and the potential impact on the marine environment was thoroughly addressed. Based on the findings of the previous study, the effects of building and operating the new airport are expected to be localized and are not expected to affect your operation. However. the full environmental impact assessments for the new airport will commence in July this year to re- evaluate the situation, identify any possible adverse effects and introduce appropriate mitigation measures during both construction and operation of the new airport.
