Solving the problem of transport for the local villages prior to formation of airport at cik zin cik
G.N. No.
dated
We are writing to urge the Government to solve the problem of transport for the local villages prior to coming out reclamation for the formation of the airport at Chek Lap Kok. It is hoped that the villagers would be provided with transport facilities, or their livelihood would be seriously affected. Villages which will be affected by reclamation are Sha Lo Wan, Sham Shek Village and San Tau Village. There is no overland access to the above-mentioned villages. The villagers all along rely on small boats to travel to and fro Tung Chung. Moreover, their agricultural produce is delivered by Tung Chung co-operative society to Cheung Sha Wan Market. As reclamation will be carried out in the sea between Sha Lo Wan and Tung Chung for the formation of the airport, their only sea access will be Villagers will suffer inconvenience and vegetable farmers, financial losses once the access is blocked. Therefore, we hope that satisfactory arrangements could be made to combat the problem and hereby put forward two points of view :
(1) Overland access should be provided to Tai O in the west and
Tung Chung in the east.
(2)
If overland access is provided, the transport problem of the villagers as well as their agricultural produce will be solved.
Villagers engaged in fishing activities at the seaside should be granted reasonable compensation together with assistance to change their occupation.
Yours faithfully,
YU Yuen-hei
Chairman
Tai O Rural Committee
(Signatures of Village Representatives
of Sha Lo Wan Village, Sham Shek Village and San Tau Village)
P.S. The Government should also be alert to pollution of the environment.
