a suspension bridge is required, rather than any other
design. The technology has been long established for
safe and secure operation of such bridges under the
most extreme conditions. Engineering studies on the

investigations, design and a detailed construction
programme, show that the bridge can be completed prior
to the opening of the new airport. The "shorter"
bridge suggested would require more than a year for
engineering design and site investigations let alone
the time required for detailed design and
construction.

With regard
regard to the proposed double-deck rail/road
viaduct structure along the coastline between Tsuen
Wan and Sham Tseng, there are a number of very
significant disadvantages. The most obvious of these
would be the serious detrimental impact on the
environment. Large residential areas would suffer air
and noise pollution and the visual impact would be
significant. A point not addressed in Mr. Wu's report
is the equally important impact on the marine
environment.

Mr. Gordon Wu's proposal suggests eliminating the West
