a suspension bridge is required, rather than any other

design. The technology has been long established for

safe and secure operation of such bridges under the

investigations, design and a detailed construction

programme, show that the bridge can be completed prior

to the opening of the new airport. The "shorter"

bridge suggested would require more than a year for

engineering design and site investigations let alone

the time required for detailed design and

construction.

With regard

regard to the proposed double-deck rail/road

viaduct structure along the coastline between Tsuen

Wan and Sham Tseng, there are a number of very

significant disadvantages. The most obvious of these

would be the serious detrimental impact on the

environment. Large residential areas would suffer air

and noise pollution and the visual impact would be

significant. A point not addressed in Mr. Wu's report

is the equally important impact on the marine

environment.

b. Elimination of the West Kowloon Reclamation and

Expressway

Mr. Gordon Wu's proposal suggests eliminating the West
