GOVERNOR'S VISIT TO HONG KONG DEPARTMENT, 29 AUGUST 1990

PADS

-

Gordon Wu, whilst endorsing the need for a new airport and its proposed location at Chek Lap Kok, has criticised

Mrs Chan's recent press statement that a decision on rail links was contingent on project timing and availability of resources Wu is against the plan for a suspension bridge which he claims is risky, lacks sense and would not be completed by 1997. He has other ideas for bridge/rail

links.

Dredging and Reclamation Contract. Contract was awarded to Chinese company shortly after Mr Maude's visit to Peking. Had timing/announcement of award been made to coincide with visit, Mr Maude could usefully have made reference to it in his discussions with Chinese.

Optimism by the Anglo Japanese Group (AJC) for a strong Anglo/Japanese bid for the fixed link. HMG backing AJC in respect of fixed link.
