Kai Tak/Chek Lap Kok: Capacities

1.

Capacity (on completion of all improvement works) estimated to be 24 million passengers p.a. Latest estimate

is that this will be reached in 1994. Capacity on opening

of one runway at Chek Lap Kok in 1997 will be 28.6m. Ultimate capacity of CLK on full development (2 runways)

will be 80m p.a.

No further expansion of Kai Tak

possible. Passenger terminal capacity recently expanded

from 3400 to 5300 passengers

passengers per hour. Expansion scheme now in hand to increase aircraft parking bays from 45 (in

1989) to 69 on completion.

Chek Lap Kok : Works

Master Plan Consultancy to start in June 1990. First contract for works site preparation to

1991. Tenders for main contracts for seawall/reclamation

work to be called mid-1991 starting early 1992.

Port

3.

Port throughput is forecast to increase five-fold by 2011 at an annual growth rate of 8%. Over past 5 years annual growth has been at 14%. Growth already triggered

work on container Terminal 8 on Stonecutters and planning

for No. 9 on Tsing Yi. Provision beyond this and for multi-purpose berths only possible by adopting new strategy.
