THE AFRICAN ELEPHANT
1. You asked for a note on the current conservation status of the African elephant for Lord Caithness's use during his forthcoming visit to Hong Kong.
2.
I attach a note covering both the conservation status of the elephant and developments over the past year in the ivory trade. It is longer than requested because firstly the ivory issue is still extremely topical in Hong Kong and secondly Lord Caithness, during his time at the DOE, was himself responsible for the ivory question and, I assume, retains an interest in the subject.
3.
HKD agree.
