The DTI, through its chosen organiser, Fairs & Exhibitions

Ltd, mounted a highly prestigious all-British exhibition in Hong

Kong in November 1989 to mark the official opening of the new HK

Convention & Exhibition Centre, which was carried out by

TRHS the Prince and Princess of Wales. This was entitled

in Hong Kong'. The exhibition was conceived as a demonstration of

the UK's confidence in and commitment to Hong Kong's commercial

future. A British Council 'Education' exhibition also took place

in the Centre at this time.

28 In financial year 1990/91 the DTI is planning to co-sponsor 17 outward trade missions to Hong Kong and British groups at 15 international exhibitions in the territory. Hong Kong is one of

the most visited markets under DTI official support schemes.

MINISTERIAL TRADE VISITS TO HONG KONG

Ministers have pursued an active schedule of trade

promotional visits to Hong Kong though none has been since the

events in China in June 1989. Listed below are visits since

mid-1988.

The then Secretary of State for Trade & Industry, Lord Young,

visited HK between 19 and 22 June 1988.

Mr MacGregor, as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries & Food,

visited 16-19 September 1988.

Mr Morrison, as Minister of State for Energy, visited

23-27 September 1988.

Mr Maude, as DTI's PUSS for Corporate Affairs, visited

27-29 September 1988.
