The auction of

commercial sites drew a mixed response, while the

auction results in respect of industrial sites were

not encouraging except for those at a good location

and with convenient transport connections.

In 1989, 8 sites with a total area of 4.1

hectares were taken up in the Tai Po and Yuen Long

Industrial Estates, compared with 17 sites with a

total area of 17.2 hectares taken up in 1988

(Table 6). By the end of 1989, 96% of the land in

the Tai Po Industrial Estate and 42% of the land in

the Yuen Long Industrial Estate were allocated.

Feedback from Industry Department

27.

Some qualitative information on recent

trends in capital investment in the manufacturing

industries was obtained by the Industry Department

during regular factory visits and from contacts with

manufacturers. The information, which is largely

specific in nature and probably subjective, is

summarised below :

(i) The overall investment situation in

the fourth quarter of 1989 remained

quiet. Many manufacturers were undergoing a period of business

consolidation, because of the sluggish

overseas demand for their products.

Investment in the electronics and

metal products industries was,

however, more active than in other

industries.
