Britain's Economic Stake in Hong Kong

You will have seen from Mr Wall's minute of 4 April that one of the points which arose at the Secretary of State's meeting with Ministers and officials yesterday was the need to have credible agreed figures for Britain's economic stake in Hong Kong. The Home Secretary's Parliamentary Private Secretary, Mr Brandon Bravo, had raised the point with the Secretary of State bemoaning the fact that he could not get anyting useful out of DTI or the Treasury.

Mr Brandon Bravo has now given the Secretary of State the enclosed sheet of bull points which he has put together for his own use. This looks to me to be very much in line with the figures quoted in the draft annual report to Parliament and the paper that the Hong Kong Government have produced on British interests in Hong Kong. The Secretary of State would be grateful for any comments which you or Mr Maude may have. You might also like to ensure that Mr Brandon Bravo does indeed have the up-to-date material on this subject.

I also enclose another bundle of related papers from Mr Brandon Bravo on which no action seems to me to be required.
