The
Annual Meeting of the Bank in Hong Kong
last Board Meeting reporting telegram noted that there was competition to host an Annual Meeting of the Bank among its members.
You may remember that in New Delhi, Hong Kong surprisingly offered to host an Annual Meeting of the Bank within the next few years.
I spoke subsequently to the Hong Kong Governor, Mr. David Nendick, who said that both London and Beijing had agreed to the Hong Kong proposal to host the Annual Meeting of the Bank.
Hong Kong is prepared to host a meeting of the Bank in 1992, 1993 or 1994. Fiji is prepared to host the Annual Meeting of the Bank in 1993 or 1994, and France will host the Annual Meeting of the Bank in Nice in 1994. The French and Fijian invitation came first and may, particularly in the case of France, have priority. The view from capitals is that there should be a meeting in Manila at the very least in one year out of two.
At the same time, there are a number of political considerations associated with the offer from Hong Kong. It is also the case that a meeting in Hong Kong, assuming a Hong Kong contribution along the lines of the usual contribution of host Governments, might well prove very little different in cost from a meeting in Manila.
