1.
The following issues were discussed at Mr Maude's meeting this morning:
Nationality.
We should check with the Governor whether there would be any requirement to publish the names of successful applicants for British citizenship. It was agreed that this would be very unhelpful.
BTC locally employed staff. You outlined a number of possible ways of dealing with the question of nationality for BTC and British Council locally employed staff. Mr Maude would be grateful for a note setting out how we might take this forward and when (eg during Committee stage). .
Composition of the Advisory Committee. Mr Maude is very much in favour of Peter Heap sitting on this Committee and would like to make this point to Mr Lloyd well in advance of the decision on the composition of the Committee; he would be grateful for a draft letter.
Naval patrol boats. You undertook to find out from the MOD how Mr Hatfield's talks in Hong Kong went.
-
Autonomy. Mr Maude would be grateful for a timetable up to 1997 setting out for each issue we have considered under the broad heading of 'managing the transition' at least two deadlines when each decision would have to be made by, and when it could happen/should be implemented. He would also be grateful for a draft (personal) telegram to the Governor
