situation on and after 1 July 1997. It does not

preclude the grant of British citizenship to any person in Hong Kong before that date.

We are doing everything we can to convince the

Chinese Government that the sole purpose of our Nationality

package is to maintain the stability and prosperity of

Hong Kong, not to undermine it, and that we are not seeking to perpetuate British influence after 1997.
