1991. I have no doubt that the local Chinese teachers will

not have wholeheartedly supported the scheme; but then what

body of people who could see some of the job opportunities being lost would? It has also provided extremely difficult

for the expatriate teachers to fit in. He/she would

probably be the only expatriate in a whole school and

therefore would be socially cut off. The standard of English language teaching in Hong Kong schools is not great but this is something that the Government is seized of and

is making strenuous efforts to improve. Everyone in Hong

Kong realises the importance of English in the business

world. The demand for English language studies from the British Council has soared again in the last year or so. I simply do not accept that Hong Kong people are less interested in pursuing English studies then they have been in the past.
