Dear Mr Maude
On February 27 the Archbishop of York, the Most Rev Dr John S Habgood, and the Rev Bernard Thorogood, General Secretary of the United Reformed Church, will lead a Delegation from the British Council of Churches which has been invited to visit Hong Kong by the Hong Kong Christian Council.
You will be aware that the Churches in Hong Kong have provided a focus and organisational structure for the expression of widespread social concern over the future of the territory and its peoples. On a number of occasions recently the Hong Kong Christian Council has shared with us its understanding of recent developments, and in response the Assembly of the British Council of Churches last November expressed its support for the demands which are being voiced through the Hong Kong Churches. These representations and the text of the Assembly Resolution have already been shared with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
In preparation for the forthcoming visit, Dr Habgood has asked me to contact your Office to request an interview during the afternoon of Thursday Feiyu
for himself and four other members of the Delegation. He would like to be briefed on Her Majesty's Government's understanding of the latest developments, and he would value an opportunity to discuss some of the considerations which have been and will be urged on us by Christian partners in Hong Kong.
If representatives of your Department can be available to meet the Archbishop of York's Group on Feb 15, we would be grateful if you could advise us of the time and place for the meeting.
Yours Faithfully
Garden Shaw

Executive Secretary for Asia and the Pacific.
