1. In his letter
22June, Michael Suen noted that Wu Jie said he would be leaving the Chinese JLG Office soon. Recently, Chen Feng, an interpreter in the MFA's Interpretation and Translation Department, told me that Wu would be returning to Peking within a few months to work in that Department. A replace- ment would be sent from Interpretation and Translation Department, but Chen claimed not to know who.
2. Chen commented that Wu had had a hard time early on in his interpreting career since he had had to interpret for people like Lin Zhiying who themselves had been very good interpreters in the past. This had put a lot of pressure on Wu. Chen also commented that having Wu Hongbu sitting at the same table ever ready to correct the interpretation did not help an interpreter's confidence!
