The UKRep JLG Office opened in July 1988, as did their Chinese counter- part, though the JLG began work in 1985 on a non-resident basis. The Joint Liaison Group were set up in terms of the Sino-British Joint Declaration on the Question of Hong Kong made in December 1984. The JLG's task is to smooth the transfer of Government in 1997 when Hong Kong reverts to China's sovereignty. The British and Chinese JLG teams hold three plenary
