Dairy and Meat Development

42. The FAO Regional Dairy Development and Training Team for Asia and the Pacific provided training through model dairy development training and mobile dairy training units in Thailand and Indonesia. National training centres in Indonesia have also been supported financially and technically. The preparation of a "Dairy Manual" based partly on the past experience of the Team was initiated. A joint FAO/DANIDA evaluation team reviewed the progress of dairy training in the Region.

Bangladesh, China, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal and Viet Nam have been assisted in specialized fields of dairy technology through TCP or UNDP- funded projects. A TCP project to strengthen the National Meat Technology Training Centre in Thailand was completed and another initiated to strengthen laboratory capacity to control residues of toxic chemicals in export poultry meat.

Assistance has been provided to the dairy sector in China, Bangladesh and India under Operation Flood III with support from UNDP and Unilateral Trust Funds, and to the meat sector in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Tuvalu and Viet Nam under the Regular Programme.

FAO provided assistance for officials from Laos and Viet Nam to participate in the Seminar on Improvement of Production and Quality of Milk, held in Poland from 16-25 November 1988, and for specialists from Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam to participate in the International Seminar on Meat Hygiene and Slaughter Technology for Trainers in October 1989 in the Federal Republic of Germany organized by the Federal Health Office.

Livestock Production

A Regional Workshop on Biotechnology in Animal Production and Health was held, and several areas in which this new technology would be directly applicable in the Region were identified. A Regional Network for the exchange of information on the progress made in this field was established.

A Regional Workshop on Livestock Marketing was conducted with cooperation of the Association of Food Marketing Agencies in Asia and the Pacific (AFMA) in the Philippines, to exchange experiences of member countries and promote better marketing systems for livestock and livestock products. A TCP project provided support to India to review the current situation and make recommendations for egg and poultry marketing. Duck production was promoted through the Regional Training Course held in Thailand. A Regional review paper on "Livestock Development in Asia-Pacific Region" was brought out. The "ASIAN LIVESTOCK", a monthly publication, continued to be published.

48.

A Workshop on Small Ruminant Production under Tree Cropping was held in Malaysia in December 1988 on integrating livestock production into existing cropping systems.
