8. Progress and prospects of biotechnology for crop and livestock

production in Asia and the Pacific.

The potential benefits from the use of biotechnology in crop and livestock production appear extremely promising. However, the technology is higly sophisticated and the preparedness of developing countries varies greatly in harnessing it. The paper discusses the main issues involved in the use of biotechnology for increased agricultural production and rural development, the policy implications at national and regional levels, including cooperation among the countries of the Region in this respect, and outlines strategies for action in strengthening biotechnology programmes in the Region.
