Appendix VI
(i) Approval of schools
(j)
The Government reserves the right not to pay an allowance if, on the advice of the Director of Education, it is considered that the school is not of an acceptable educational standard.
Right to refer to schools
The Government may request any school, éducation authority or public/private body to provide information relevant to the payment of these allowances. An officer will be required to refund any overpayment (if necessary by deduction from moneys due to the officer from the
Government) if the allowance paid has exceeded or exceeds that for which he is eligible.
(A) Boarding School Allowance
4.
Boarding School Allowance will be paid only for children who are full time (including weekly) boarders. The payment of this allowance is also subject to the following conditions :-
(a) Fee- definition
A boarding school fee is the inclusive boarding and tuition fee as advertised in a school's prospectus.
(b) Allowances
(c)
-
amount to be paid
Full allowance will be paid provided the total assistance does not exceed the inclusive boarding and tuition fees. Where this fee amounts to less than the appropriate boarding school allowance, payment will be restricted to the net amount actually payable by the officer (e.g. after taking account of any grants referred to in sub-paragraph (d) below).
Accommodation provided on recommendation of school
Boarding School Allowance will not be paid in cases where the school authorities merely recommend accommodation for day pupils, which are not under the full administration and control of the school authorities. In these circumstances a Day School Allowance (see paragraph 5 below) may be appropriate subject to the conditions for claiming that allowance. For children attending tertiary education institutions, Boarding School Allowance may, with the prior approval of the Secretary for the Civil Service, be granted if the child because of shortage of accommodation on campus lodges in accommodation approved by the institution, the receipted pills being endorsed to that effect by the institution.
